Everyone feels at home in the Bokrijk open-air museum, regardless of their age. You can experience first-hand, with all your senses, how people used to live. How did they make a living for themselves? How did the children go to school and how did people do their laundry without a laundry machine? Don’t expect a boring history lesson. The past is quite lively here. Better yet, you can experience it first-hand! You will encounter actors who go about their daily business in their role of school teacher, priest or farmer and who involve you, the visitor, in their activities. You find out more about old crafts and trades and meet the blacksmith, the shepherd or a hat maker. Or engross yourself in the story behind the impressive barn from the lost polder village of Oorderen.  During the Holderdebolder route small children can explore the nicest kid-friendly places in the museum, on a wooden Bokrijk horse.

You can also get a taste of the atmosphere in the turbulent Sixties in “The Sixties”, Stories and events from this era are brought to life interactively in the real-life settings: from a living room to a cinema, from a hairdressing salon to a home appliance store. You will receive an ID card of a student, a stewardess, a cyclist or another person from the Sixties. He or she is your personal guide and will introduce you to life during this period. You will need several visits to see the more than 100 historic houses, as well as all the actors at work, to re-experience the Sixties and take in all our events! Let’s face it, it takes time to work magic with time!
